Lee woke up feeling refreshed and lively. For a moment, he wondered where he was, then remembered: he was on a deep space mission, and had been in suspended animation – a kind of very deep sleep – for almost one hundred years!

Suddenly, Lee’s head bumped against the ceiling of his spacecraft. Of course! He was weightless; as there was hardly any gravity on this tiny planet orbiting Alpha Centauri B, a star in the Alpha Centauri system. Lee floated over to the window, and his mouth fell open in amazement. It was beautiful. Not just pretty. Beautiful. The crystals in the rolling purple hills glinted in the light from Alpha Centauri B. He could see entire galaxies in the distance…

But then lee noticed something strange. There was a large star in the distance, which seemed to be getting bigger. And bigger. And bigger. It was happening faster now. Hang on – was it getting closer? It was. Getting bigger, closer all the time. Still closer. Closer. Whatever it was was filling the sky now. Lee could feel the heat from it – constantly getting closer…

BOOM!

Lee was thrown into the wall by the force of the explosion. The thing had been too bright for him to see it when it was in the air, but now he could see it clearly – it was a spaceship. Panels of metal were riveted together on its shining body, which gleamed in the light from Alpha Centauri B. It was shaped like an arrow, but its nose was crumpled – it hadn’t landed deliberately – it had crashed! Lee decided to put on his spacesuit and go out to investigate.

The air-lock hissed as Lee opened it. He could hear a strange sound coming from the crashed spacecraft. He walked – or rather – bounced towards the spaceship, and began to circle around it. Now he saw the source of the sound: a door on the ship was opening. Lee stood in fright as a shadow crept round the door. Could there be aliens on board this ship? The shadow continued to move, and out of the craft stepped…

A human. Lee breathed a sigh of relief, but at the same time wondered: why were there other humans so far out in space? As far as he knew, there had been no space missions to Alpha Centauri apart from his. Suddenly, he realised that the other human had noticed him…

Part 2 is coming soon, so watch this space!
